Recently, our colleagues and residents at Bradbury House Care Home in Braintree had the pleasure of meeting the lovable Baloo, a retired police service dog, and her wonderful handler, Mandy. Our activities coordinator, Laura, came across Baloo’s story in Braintree & Witham Times and reached out to Mandy to organise a visit.
Our residents gathered outside on a lovely sunny day to meet the two, showering Baloo with cuddles as Mandy told us all her story.
Baloo, a Belgian Malinois, became a police dog with Essex Police in 2018 and worked alongside her handler, PC Ross Ashcroft, catching criminals and helping to keep people safe. Sadly, in October 2018, Baloo’s career was brought to an end after she was hit by a car, resulting in one of her front legs being amputated.
Mandy adopted Baloo and after her story struck a chord with so many, the two began visiting schools and community groups, helping to teach lessons in courage and kindness.
Despite her disability, Baloo is an energetic and affectionate dog and brought so much joy to our residents, giving lots of kisses and having a snuggle with our home manager, Sheree’s grandson, Louie. Our resident, Donald said he “enjoyed listening to the story of Baloo,” and Jerry commented that “dogs bring so much joy to us all!”
We are so grateful to Mandy for taking the time to visit us at Bradbury House and to Baloo for her service and for putting smiles on so many faces!
