The team and residents at Garth House Care Home in Dorking welcomed the Surrey Fire and Rescue Service team into their home for International Firefighters’ Day.
The residents had the opportunity to chat with the firefighters, ask questions, and learn about their roles. Team Leader Phil led the discussion, sharing information about the work carried out by the fire service, including their unique shift patterns and extensive training.
Health & Wellbeing Coordinator and Dementia Ambassador, Nergiz, spoke to the firefighters about dementia awareness and answered their questions.
To show their appreciation for the firefighters’ hard work, the residents gave them a thank-you card and boxes of delicious cupcakes, baked by the home’s talented chef, Glenn.
During the visit, the residents also shared fond childhood memories of the old Dorking Fire Station, which was once located in the centre of town.
Resident Joe said, “It was a wonderful morning seeing the firefighters here and talking to them. I remember when I was a child, we used to see the firefighters in Dorking and wave at them.”
Resident John said, “I used to support events with the firefighters.”
