Last week, the residents at Garth House Care Home in Dorking celebrated the 80th anniversary of VE Day with a party.
Throughout the week, Health and Wellbeing Coordinator Nergiz organised a variety of activities to commemorate VE Day. These included a themed word search, a short documentary, wartime music sessions, a music quiz, and nostalgic conversations about evacuation, food, clothing, and the importance of community support.
A highlight of the celebration was a performance by mezzo-soprano Kathleen Linton-Ford, who transported the residents, guests, and Garth House team back to the 1940s with her amazing performance.
Resident John, a retired military officer, said, “I truly enjoyed the celebration. What a great way to mark the occasion. After the performance, observing the two-minute silence was emotional for me. I would like to thank Nergiz and everyone who made this day extra special.”
Resident Leslie, also a retired military officer who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, added, “I enjoyed every minute of it. I loved the show and singing together. Thank you for this special event.”
Another resident, Hilda, who was evacuated during the war, said, “I had a great celebration. All those memories came back again. Thank you for this special party.”
