The Petersfield Poppy Project: Steep House Joins the Community Tribute
A heartfelt initiative is underway in Petersfield as local residents come together to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. Known as The Petersfield Poppy Project, this community endeavour will see thousands of hand-crafted poppies—knitted and crocheted with care—form a striking display on Remembrance Sunday.
The vision is both poignant and ambitious: to create a cascade of poppies flowing over the exterior of St Peter’s Church, forming a dramatic waterfall backdrop for the town’s November service of remembrance. Organisers hope to collect at least 6,000 poppies, though with such incredible community spirit the total could reach closer to 10,000.
Recently at Steep House Nursing Home, residents, team members, and families have been busily clicking needles and looping yarn, adding their own poppies to the collection. For many, the act of knitting has been a chance to reflect, share stories, and honour the sacrifices of those who served. For others, it has been an opportunity to work together on something meaningful for the whole community.
This project is a shining example of what Petersfield does best: uniting across generations to remember the past and celebrate the present. Steep House is proud to play its part in creating this powerful symbol of gratitude and remembrance, and everyone is looking forward to seeing the final installation in November.
