Last Saturday, Southlands Place care home in Bexhill-on-Sea brought our residents, families, and friends together to celebrate our annual summer fete. We wanted to make this year’s celebration one to remember so we decided on a circus theme to raise money for St Michael’s Hospice.
The residents in our art club helped us by making some beautiful decorations for the fete and our brilliant wellbeing coordinators, Alex and Nikki, went above and beyond as always and pulled their resources to bring ‘Cirque-du-Southlands’ to life, with fantastic inflatable games, performers, stalls and contests.
And of course, it just wouldn’t be a Southlands event if the team wasn’t all dressed up, would it? Our team all looked fabulous dressed up as clowns, a fortune teller, and a ring master.
Just like last year’s event, Fiona stepped up to the plate for our pieing fundraiser. Last year, she was covered in pink gunge… this year, cream pies to the face! Our colleagues kicked off the fun by throwing the first pies and pretty soon, everyone had their hands up shouting for their turn next! Friends and family made their generous donations before the event and every £20 we raised equaled one pie to Fiona’s face. Everyone had a great laugh including Fiona, who took it like a champ, and raised a whopping £275… That’s 14 pies! Our rather cheeky resident, Dennis, commented, “I really enjoyed the entertainment but especially enjoyed throwing a pie into Fiona’s face!”
Our circus games were so much fun, posing for photos in the photobooth and getting some funky temporary tats at the tattoo shop. The inflatable games were a huge hit with the kids – they had an absolute blast shooting targets with nerf guns and playing giant darts.
Our talented entertainers put on a great show, getting everyone singing and dancing along with some fantastic show tunes.
We brought a wonderful day to a close to announce the winners of our raffle, Lisa and David, who won a jar of sweets and a gigantic monkey AKA Mr T!
Our circus summer fete succeeded with flying colours, enjoyed by everyone involved who all sang Alex and Nikki’s praises for their amazing work. Visitor, Eileen, commented, “a wonderful day as always, well done Alex and Nikki!” and resident, Keith, added, “I had a wonderful time – the girls did a great job!”
Thank you to our amazing team, residents and loved ones for bringing the circus to town in spectacular fashion and helping us to donate to such a wonderful cause!
