100th birthday celebrations at Riverside Place

Last week, the team and residents at Riverside Place Care Home in Ware celebrated beloved resident Gwen’s 100th birthday.

Now a proud member of Riverside’s ‘100 Club’, Gwen joins fellow centenarians and residents Dennis Bly (101), Frank Prior (100), and Marjorie Goeman (102).

Home Manager Jo Coughlan shared her excitement, saying, “having one resident celebrate their 100th year is a delight, but for there to be four is fabulous!”

Gwen’s milestone birthday was marked with more than one celebration, and there was plenty of sherry (her favourite tipple) to go around. A series of festivities were held in her honour, including a relaxing boat trip with her family.

When asked what her secret to a long life was, Gwen replied, “being lucky in life and keeping busy.” Always one to stay active, she continues to enjoy time in the garden, knitting and sewing, and regularly participates in exercise classes to “stay nimble.”

Gwen first came to Riverside Place for a respite stay but fell in love with the community so much that she decided to make it her permanent home. On her birthday, Gwen was touched by a surprise from the team and residents who presented her with a special card. Chef Jonny Markwell also created a beautiful cake designed to look like a bouquet of flowers.

Her celebratory week was a testament to the vibrant and supportive community at Riverside Place, where all four centenarians agree: an active life and a bit of luck are the secrets to reaching 100!
