Here at Magna, we recently had the pleasure of hosting an intergenerational sensory play event in partnership with Hip Hip Hooray Play, bringing residents and young children together for an afternoon of fun, connection and creativity.
The Valentine’s-themed session featured a range of hands-on sensory activities designed for all ages to enjoy together, including building water gardens, painting and exploring a sand tray.
Our Home Manager, Kayleigh, said: “These sessions came about through a shared belief in the power of bringing generations together and harnessing the magic that children bring to those around them.
“Intergenerational play has so many benefits, and we are proud to be able to host events like this at Magna. Seeing the smiles and engagement from our residents truly warms my heart — it’s incredibly special to know we’ve helped create those moments.”
Intergenerational play is known to offer wide-ranging benefits. For young children, time spent with older people can encourage empathy and provide valuable learning experiences. For older adults, interacting with children is linked to improved emotional wellbeing, reduced loneliness and a stronger sense of community.
Hip Hip Hooray Play, run by Jessica Matthews and based in Bournemouth, specialises in creating meaningful play experiences for young children.
Jessica said: “At Hip Hip Hooray Play, we’re passionate about creating experiences that go beyond play alone. Hosting our Valentine’s session at Magna Care Centre brought generations together in a truly special way, and we’re grateful to have been part of it.
“The heart-warming moments we witnessed highlight just how powerful shared experiences can be, no matter our age.”
Both residents and children thoroughly enjoyed the session, with many sharing positive feedback.
Parent Hannah said: “My daughter Freya loves the sessions at the care home and really enjoys interacting with the residents. She loves everything from the water play to the arts and crafts. It’s wonderful to see how much joy it brings to everyone involved.”
Resident Anne added: “Such a special morning. The children were gorgeous — watching their smiles and helping them play was really lovely.”
