The team and residents at Knowle Park Nursing Home in Cranleigh were delighted to celebrate a very special milestone, resident Nora’s 100th birthday.
Nora enjoys the comfort of her room, particularly its lovely view, and has made the space her own by decorating it with many of the beautiful paintings she has created over the years.
Throughout her life, Nora has embraced a wide range of hobbies. She has loved ballroom dancing, creative oil painting, gardening, sewing, and making soft furnishings using both knitting machines and her much-loved sewing machine.
Born in Wimbledon, Nora spent her early years there before being evacuated to Chichester during the war. She later moved to Sutton, where she married, and after the war she and her husband Edward settled in Crawley, where their first three children, June, Martin and Robin, were born. The family moved to Camberley in the late 1960s, where their fourth child, Sidney, arrived, before eventually retiring to Bideford, Devon. After Edward sadly passed away, Nora moved to Worthing to be closer to her family.
Among Nora’s fondest memories is visiting her aunt Kate’s farm in Norfolk. She recalls, with great emotion, holding tiny ducklings there and enjoying her very first car ride in 1932.
When asked her secret to a long life, Nora credits her longevity to moderation and keeping active. She has never smoked, only enjoyed the occasional sherry at Christmas, and has always protected herself from the sun. Staying busy and remaining independent have contributed to her long and fulfilling life.
Nora marked her 100th birthday surrounded by her loving family, many of whom travelled all the way from Canada to celebrate with her. She enjoyed a beautiful birthday cake and was delighted to receive an official birthday card from the King and Queen, making the day even more memorable.
Home Manager Caroline Sears said, “Nora is a real character and very independent. She loves a hot chocolate at night with one sugar. She is an exceptional artist, and her room is adorned with her wonderful artwork. It is a pleasure to care for Nora here at Knowle Park.”
