Recently, Kippingtons Nursing Home in Sevenoaks welcomed the year 10s of Sevenoaks School to visit the home and meet the residents and team.
The wellbeing team reached out to the school, who were looking for interesting and meaningful roles for students to take on for their year 10 work experience, and offered them the opportunity to volunteer for companionship visits and experience life in the home.
Residents were delighted to meet the enthusiastic students who were instantly made to feel welcome among their friendly and humorous group. The young volunteers sat down with residents and got to know each other, sharing stories and chatting about their plans for Christmas and, to break the ice and get into the festive mood, everyone sang some Christmas classics together.
Intergenerational activities have many benefits for older people in care homes, giving them companionship, a sense of calm and an excuse to let out their sillier sides! They all had a lovely time as did the students of Sevenoaks School who had a rewarding experience learning about the older generation while making new friends!
