Abbeycrest donated sensory activity equipment

Our team at Abbeycrest Nursing Home in Sonning Common are delighted to have received an extremely generous donation from Reading Abbey Rotary Club – portable multi-sensory activity equipment. This fantastic piece of equipment contains a variety of memory games/aids designed for people living with dementia.

Sensory activities for dementia residents can play an important part in helping with dementia symptoms as the brain responds to different types of stimulation. Research has shown that sensory stimulation through sensory activities is linked to immediate positive effects on the mood and behaviours of people with dementia.

The concept of the AMuSED toolkit was initially developed by Emeritus Professor Rachel McCrindle and Dr Esther Olorunda as part of a PhD at the University of Reading. Following the success of the prototype evaluation in a number of care homes, Rachel and Fred Mccrindle from Reading Abbey Rotary club raised substantial funds to enable four more care homes to benefit from these toolkits.

They visited us at Abbeycrest to present the box to our home manager, Sue Smart, who was so grateful to accept the donation. They then demonstrated to our colleagues how to use the various games and activities with our residents.

We are overwhelmed by the generosity of the Reading Abbey Rotary Club and would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to them for this amazing donation. We can’t wait to try it out and see the benefits it offers the residents of Abbeycrest.
