VE Day Celebration at Riverside Place – A Day to Remember
Riverside Place was filled with music, joy and heartfelt reflection as residents and team members came together to mark VE Day with a truly memorable celebration. The day was a perfect blend of community spirit, nostalgic tribute, and gratitude for those who served.
The morning began with a lively VE Day quiz, sparking laughter and conversation among residents as they shared stories and tested their knowledge. Mealtimes were made extra special thanks to the Home’s talented chefs, who served up a delicious traditional British menu that delighted everyone. Tables were arranged in a long, communal row, echoing the timeless charm of a classic street party — a thoughtful detail that helped evoke the spirit of the 1940s.
In the afternoon, spirits were lifted even higher by a vibrant musical performance from much-loved volunteer Johnny. His passion and energy were infectious, bringing smiles and even a few dance moves from the crowd.
A particularly touching moment came with the visit of Amelia from Ware Town Council, who presented gifts and a beautifully written card from the Mayor of Ware. Her visit was a moving tribute to Riverside Place’s veterans, especially the four residents aged over 100 who had served during the war. Amelia took the time to speak with each of these remarkable individuals, offering personal thanks on behalf of the town — a gesture that was deeply appreciated by all.
Behind the scenes, the celebration was very much a team effort. The Wellbeing team thoughtfully decorated the Home with VE Day-themed touches, creating an atmosphere of both festivity and remembrance. The chefs prepared a mouth-watering spread, carers ensured residents were comfortable and engaged, and precious moments were captured throughout the day to share with families and the wider community.
One resident summed up the spirit of the occasion perfectly, saying: “What a great day, I’ve smiled all day!”
It was, indeed, a day filled with pride, joy, and heartfelt remembrance — and Riverside Place was proud to honour the courage and resilience of those who gave so much.
