The grounds of Stowford House Care Home in Abingdon were filled with joy, remembrance, and the warm hum of community spirit as they marked a momentous occasion the 80th anniversary of VE Day the end of World War II in Europe. In honour of this historic day, the residents and team were joined by the army from Dalton Barracks, Abingdon, whose presence brought pride and a profound sense of connection to the shared history.
Loved ones, colleagues, residents and soldiers came together to enjoy a glorious afternoon tea in memory of Victory in Europe Day. The atmosphere was filled with laughter, music, and heartfelt conversations as everyone took a moment to reflect on the sacrifices made and the peace we enjoy today.
A highlight of the afternoon was a touching speech delivered by Padre Joseph, who stood proudly with his regiment by his side. His words, filled with compassion and reverence, honoured the men and women who gave their lives during the war. As everyone bowed their heads in prayer, a deep sense of gratitude and unity washed over everybody.
The event concluded with a moving rendition of the iconic wartime song “We’ll Meet Again” by Vera Lynn. Voices young and old sang together, some with tears in their eyes, others smiling in remembrance, all joined in a moment of true togetherness.
A special thanks goes to the amazing hospitality team who prepared a wonderful spread of traditional afternoon tea delights.
It was a day to remember, a beautiful tribute to peace, to history, and to the enduring strength of community.
