Royal Recognition for Riverside Place Care Home Resident

Riverside Place Care Home Resident Lesley

As the Queen celebrates her Platinum Jubilee, Lesley a resident at Riverside Place Care Home has shared her story of when she met the Queen to receive an honour in recognition of her work.

Earlier this year Her Majesty The Queen became the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee. This marked her 70 years of service to the people of the United Kingdom, the Realms and the Commonwealth. To celebrate this unprecedented anniversary, events have been taking place across the country and everyone thoroughly enjoyed being part of those celebrations at Riverside Place where Lesley shared her story.

In the 1999 Birthday Honours, Lesley Southgate was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) which she received in recognition for her services to Standards of Practice and to Primary Care. Professor Dame Lesley Southgate got her Damehood in 1997, which she received for services to general medical education. She worked hard for many years to standardise medical education around the world.

She was nominated for the award for starting a major, long-term, contribution in medicine at an international level. Dame Lesley has published widely but is most proud of a publication on professionalism which is her most cited publication.

Following the recognition Lesley and her family went to Buckingham Palace for her to receive the award from the Queen, reflecting on the day and event Lesley said “I remember that Prince Phillip was a little bit cheeky”.

Her daughter Clare said “I remember what she was most concerned about was being able to curtsy properly (she curtseyed beautifully!) . There were about 20 people awarded at the ceremony and as a family, we were able to attend and get a glimpse inside Buckingham palace. I do remember the carpet in the room the ceremony was held, being very plush!”

What a wonderful story to share on such a special occasion.
