Priory Court Care Home in Epsom was recently visited by Richard, a regular visitor with a passion for using music to support those living with dementia. Returning to perform his ‘Memories Are Made of Music’ project, he played a lively mix of 50s and 60s rock’n’roll classics that took residents on a joyful trip down memory lane.
With songs like Wake Up Little Suzie and Knees Up Mother Brown, the nostalgic performance had residents singing and dancing along, with the lifestyle team joining in the fun and encouraging everyone to get involved. They were even joined by the loveable Marvin, the home’s resident cat, who always goes where the party is and where he’ll get the most fuss!
One of the highlights of the session was when resident, Edward, shared a dance with the lifestyle lead, Fiona, to Bring Me Sunshine and the song brought back a flood of memories and emotions for him.
Richard’s ‘Memories Are Made of Music’ project is a wonderful reminder of how music can be a powerful tool in dementia care. Music has been shown to improve mood, help with cognitive function, trigger long-term memories and provide a sense of comfort and connection. As Richard shared, “It’s not just about the music itself, it’s about the memories it brings back and the conversations it sparks.”
A big thank you to Richard for bringing joy, nostalgia, and the powerful benefits of music to the residents of Priory Court.
