Bourne House marks VE Day with commemorative celebration

Bourne House Nursing Home in Surbiton hosted a moving and memorable VE Day celebration, marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe.

The special event brought together residents, families, and local dignitaries to honour the bravery and sacrifices of a generation. Among the guests were MP Sir Ed Davey and Mayor of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames Liz Green, both of whom joined the festivities.

“It’s great to be here at Bourne House, with the residents, listening to some of the old music and having little chats with them about their memories of the war,” said Sir Ed Davey.

A highlight of the afternoon was a performance by David Cowdrey, talented pianist and long-time friend of the home. David played a selection of classic wartime songs, including beloved favourites by Vera Lynn.

Following the musical tribute, the Mayor addressed the crowd with a heartfelt speech reflecting on the significance of VE Day. “I think it’s really important to mark these occasions with people that remember some of it, who were living through it, but can tell the stories… and it’s really nice to celebrate with people together, and enjoy great cake!” said Mayor Liz Green.

Guests were invited to explore the VE Day commemorative garden, specially prepared for the occasion with decorations and historical displays.

Home Manager Chris Trott said: “It was a privilege to host such a meaningful event for our residents. Many of them lived through the war, today was a chance to remember, celebrate, and come together as a community.”
