Belmont House receptionist Daniella Rodel is training for the London Landmark Half Marathon in April, where she will complete the race in her wheelchair to raise vital funds for her wheelchair rugby team, the Harlequin Jesters.
Daniella joined the Harlequin Jesters around 18 months ago and quickly found a new passion for the sport. Three years ago, Daniella was diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), a condition that affects how the brain communicates with the body and can cause a range of physical symptoms. Although there is no damage to the brain itself, the condition can be difficult to diagnose and manage.
Over time, Daniella’s symptoms have meant she now relies on a wheelchair. Determined to stay active and continue her love of sport, she found a welcoming community in wheelchair rugby.
“Living with FND is hugely challenging,” said Daniella. “It’s hard knowing the symptoms may worsen over time, but that’s why I’m so committed to building my strength now.
“Being part of the Harlequin Jesters is incredibly special to me. It’s wonderful to be part of a team with people who have different disabilities and who really look after each other. One of the coaches also lives with FND and takes amazing care of me, pulling me off the pitch when I need to rest.
“I’m hoping to raise £500 to go towards new equipment for the team. We are looking at purchasing a new rugby wheelchair.”
Before her diagnosis, Daniella worked as a bus driver but had to give up the role when her symptoms worsened. She now works as a receptionist at Belmont House, where colleagues and residents have been cheering her on.
“The team at Belmont House have been so supportive,” said Daniella. “Lots of them have sponsored me for the race. I love being on reception because I get to support the families and residents in the home – I really enjoy helping people.”
Maria Stancu, Home Manager at Belmont House, said: “Daniella is an amazing person. She is passionate about everything she does and is a real asset to our team. We’re all incredibly proud of her and it’s a privilege to support her fundraising for the Harlequin Jesters.”
